July Whole-day Apprenticeship Camps

These art camps are created specially for kids ages 9 and up! Apprenticeship Camps offer older students the opportunity to continue their art education with the professionals in the Arts District. One week, whole-day camps are based upon a specific theme or discipline and provide a more advanced creative experience. Class sizes tend to be smaller to encourage more individual attention. The 2013 Apprenticeship Camps are: Digital Photography and Fashion Design. Time: 9:00 a.m. – 3:15 p.m. Tuition: $400 + Materials fee.

 

July Half-day Intensive Camps

Our one week long Intensive Camps give children of all ages the opportunity to immerse themselves in a camp focused on one particular creative experience. Intensives camps, often in a small group setting, are designed to give students more individualized time with professional artists. Camp themes include  fiber art, music and storytelling, jewelry design, oil painting, abstract painting, traditional Chinese qi gong, yoga, and Japanese manga. Times: 9:00 – 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 – 3:15 p.m. Tuition: $200 + Materials fee.

CAMP OFFERINGS

SESSION I -  July 15-19, 2013

Whole-day Apprenticeship Camps

Digital Photography A professional photographer will teach your kids to shoot fantastic photos and put their own show at a gallery in the Oak Park Arts District. Instructor: Christopher Wallace, Creative Changes. Assisted by Terry Mueller. Ages: 9 and older. Younger with permission of instructor. Tuition: $400. Materials fee: $95. (Portfolio of ten 8×10 photo prints, beveled matboard frames, and materials for the end of camp show.)

Fashion Design Students spend a week with professionals, Germaine Caprio and Pam Penney learning the art and craft of Fashion Design. Instructors: Germaine Caprio (Majamas) and Pam Penney (Pamela Penney Textiles). Ages: 10 and up. Tuition: $400. Materials fee: $20. (3 yards fabric, fabric dye, notions, paper and portfolio materials, fashion show refreshments.)

 

Morning Intensive Camps (9:00 – 11:45 a.m.)

Beginning Self-Portrait (Oil Painting) Learn cool oil painting techniques such as using color to create depth and perspective and specific brushstrokes to invent your own self-portrait. Instructor: Elizabeth Gaylord, Harrison Works. Ages: 11-15. Tuition: $200. Materials fee: $20. (Canvases)

Lotus Yoga: Next Generation (Session I) Physically and spiritually reawaken with fun backbends, handstands, dance, hula, and power moves! Instructor: Monica Schuman, Dancing Krow Studio. Assisted by Karen Schuman. Ages: 8-12. Tuition: $200. Materials fee: $15. (Yoga mat, journal, picture, hula hoop.)

Manga Mania Young artists will develop their own manga characters and storyline and learn about Japanese culture. Instructors: M.G. Bertulfo and Karen Su, Taleblazers. Ages: 9-14. Tuition: $200. Materials fee: $10. (Variety of paper styles and binding materials, portfolio, playsheets, handouts, and cultural gifts.)

Off-Loom Weaving: Seed Bead Designs Using Needle & Thread Seed beads are those small, colorful beads that create amazing patterns for bracelets when sewn together – if you only knew how!  Instructor: Jane Skapek, Bead in Hand. Ages: 11 and up. Tuition: $200. Materials fee: $40. (Several selections of beads, seed beads, thread, and bead mats.)

 

Afternoon Intensive Camps (12:30 – 3:15 p.m.)

Dragon Coils toward the Sea: Qi Gong for Teens & Tweens (Session I) Learn the 3,000 year old tradition of qi gong taught by a professional gymnast from the National Gymnastics Team of China.  Instructors: Xie Ling Welch and Frances Swine, Hug the Moon Wellness Studio. Ages 11-15.  Tuition $200. Materials fee: None.

Principles of Abstract Painting (Session I) Using the basic elements of line, color, and form and following the examples of Abstract Expressionist, Minimalist, and Action Painting artists, students will develop an understanding of Abstract Art and create their own abstract voice. Instructor: Stephen Smith, Flavor City. Venue: Harrison Works. Ages: 10-15 Tuition: $200. Materials fee: $25. (Canvases which students will take home.)

 

SESSION II – July 22-26, 2013

Morning Intensive Camps (9:00 – 11:45 a.m.)

Design by Technique: Moving Beyond Basic Beading Learn how to design stylish jewelry that you want to wear using a variety of materials and techniques. Instructor: Kate Linne, Bead in Hand. Ages: 11 and up. Tuition: $200. Materials fee: $50. (Bead mat, beading wire, leather, seed beads, chain, crimps, various findings.)

Fiber Fun. Children will explore the use of fiber as a medium for creative expression. Each day a new technique will be taught from spinning your own yarns and dying them, to felting, and more. Instructor: Pam Penney, Pamela Penney Textile Arts. Ages: 8 and above. Tuition: $200. Materials fee: $20. (Fabric, fabric dye, wool roving, yarn, paper making supplies, fabric paint.)

My Story, My Song. In this camp, young thinkers will have the chance to tell their own stories through music, create music from their stories, and have an awesome time showcasing their artistry.  Instructor: Staci Mahaffey, Taleblazers. Assisted by M.G. Bertulfo. Ages: 8-12. Tuition: $200. Materials fee: $10. (Portfolios, handouts, materials for inventing instruments.)
