RIDGE ART TO CLOSE PHYSICAL GALLERY

Our lease is up at the end of August and after much going-back-and-forth we have decided to close our physical gallery and go strictly on-line. We’ve been open at 21 Harrison Street in the Oak Park Arts District outside of Chicago for 12 years and have many terrific and loyal clients. However, it is time to ease up on the physical work that a gallery requires. Most of our client base is no longer local but extends throughout most of the country and even into Europe and Latin America thanks to the internet. Closing our space will free us up to travel more, particularly in Asia and Latin America.

We will be doing shows locally and elsewhere from time to time. In fact, we are doing a show of vintage metal from Haiti at Gallery Pink, 149 Harrison Street, September 10th through October 30th and we will be part of a group show at the same space during the holiday season.

For our many on-line clients nothing will change. Our toll-free number will remain the same. We will actually be expanding our on-line merchandise as we add pieces to the site that were previously only available in the gallery. We will miss chatting about art and politics with our local clients but we will continue to do our monthly e-letter and we encourage folks to reply. An on-line conversation would be fun. (I guess that’s what a blog is.) We will keep everyone informed about shows we are doing and the new pieces that we will be adding to our collection. Started recording in mid ’70s. Was in all EM group VCSR based in Oak Park/Forest Park late ’70s early ’80s. Recorded LP Katha Visions in 1984. Many live gigs with VCSR and solo in ’80s and ’90s. Recorded 3 CDs in mid 90s and recorded & performed with group A Bunch of Teeth in late ’90s and early ’00s. Recorded BeyondHereBe… in ‘05. All four CDs have sold internationally.
Recently featured in the Chicago Reader’s “The Secret History of Chicago Music”. New CD Galaxies IV to be released later this year.

Gallery Pink’s Ceramic & Paper Show

This summer Gallery PINK will be having its first CERAMIC & PAPER SHOW. Ceramic artists Sarah Gabel, Linda Hillman, Jon Hook, Ann Primack, Gina Lee Robbins, Kristi Sloniger, John Spiteri and Mei Wu will be exhibiting their latest work as well as paper artists, Zina Castenuela, Janice Elkins and Andrea Peterson. The diversity and high quality of the ceramic and paper art promises to make this a compelling and exciting show.

Bead in Hand, 145 Harrison Street, will be debuting our DAKOTA STONES TRUNK SHOW!

Dakota Stones is the same vendor who supplies our Stone of the Month selections, and they are sending us a large selection of semi-precious beads that we do not normally carry. We will have an assortment of unique cuts and stone types from high quality rough material. On Friday, you’ll get the best selection! We will also be giving out a free gift to the first 50 customers who make a Dakota Stones purchase through Sunday.

Creative Changes Studio, 140 Harrison Street, will have their Third Friday Personal Victory Celebration - pot luck. It’s a time to share your story with others, no matter how ‘big’ or ’small.’ For our complete schedule, please go to our website where you can also obtain information on process painting and bicycle classes.

From 5:00-9:00 you can enjoy an organic burger, have a beer and listen to a band at The Buzz Cafe, 905 S. Lombard Street.

Third Friday Gallery, Dancing Krow, 43 Harrison Street, open from 6-10 p.m.

Dancing Krow is the Art Studio of Karen Schuman, Bruce MacMartin, Jeanne Friedell, Dave Lombardi, Stacy Bowie, and Amani Borah.

Karen Schuman’s works include hand-dyed, quilted fabric pieces affixed to canvas, completed with acrylic paints; stylized paintings on handmade paper; and beaded dolls. Works convey stories of her personal soul work.

Photography 101 (ages 12 and up)
Tuesdays & Saturdays 9-11 AM
July 20, 24, 27 & 31st

Learn how to create beautiful art and self expression through photography. In this class, you will learn the basics of operating a digital camera, including working with the settings to create just the look you want. You will also develop an eye for what turns a good photo into a great one. Learn about light and rules of composition. This class is technical and experiential and you will leave with knowledge and some great art.

PLEASE NOTE: You must own or have use of a digital camera for this class.
Maximum 10 participants

$125, $120 if registering with siblings or friends

Taught by Christopher Wallace who has a BFA in Photography from Washington University, St. Louis. Christopher has been an educator for over 20 years and specializes in Fine Arts and Bicycle Education.

Thursday, July 8, Seed Beading Stitches. Familiarity with the basic seed bead stitches is often a requirement for more advanced seed beading projects. Learn about the different types and sizes of seed beads while learning one of the following stitches. Take the class more than once to learn the basics of all of the stitches: Peyote, Brick, Square, Ndebele (herringbone). NOTE: We need additional participants to avoid canceling. Saturday, July 10, Honeycomb Bracelet. This stunning bracelet design by Kimberly Stathis is created with alternating layers of Swarovski pearls and crystals held together with seed beads. The rope has a solid core but is flexible. The rope ends are each finished off with a large round crystal that sits within a cup made of tiny crystals, 24kt gold plated daisy spacers and precious seed beads. Wire is slipped into the rope to create a springy coil that wraps around the wrist. Prerequisite: Some experience with off-loom beading is helpful. NOTE: We need a minimum of 5 students in order to run this class, so please call by 6pm Thursday, July 8, to register. 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, $90 (Materials extra, 10% off. Help celebrate the 70th Birthday of John Lennon - call for artists!

Liz Gaylord, in conjunction with Harrison Works, announces a call for entries for “The John Lennon 70th Birthday” art show. This will be a juried, group art exhibit and sale opening Thursday, October 7th, 1-7 pm

Artists’ reception and party Saturday, October 9th, Noon- 7pm at Harrison Works, 17 Harrison Street, Oak Park, IL 708 308 4602

The show runs October 7th through November 28th , 2010.
Artist’s submission deadline is Sunday, September 26th, 2010.

We are looking for 2D & 3D art inspired by John Lennon &/or The Beatles. All submitted works must be ready to hang or display. Shipping costs for any works must be paid by the exhibiting artist. Works can also be
dropped off at Harrison Works during our regular hours, Thursdays through Sundays, 1-6pm. Pricing of works is up to the individual artists.

Please note: Harrison Works takes a 40% commission from all sales.

We are very excited to be working on Art on Harrison, our annual fall art show, which will be taking place September 10-11th, 2010. This year’s theme is “Celebrate the Arts in the Oak Park Arts District” and will consist of visual artists, dancers & musicians. (Business vendors are always welcome)

The galleries will be open on Friday night from 6-10:00 and on Saturday we will have exhibitors set up along Harrison Street between 12-8:00 p.m.

Special events include a mobile fashion show, where models will be walking along Harrison displaying the various fashions & jewelry from the shops in the Arts District. Due to popular demand, we will once again have a scavenger hunt for children between 12-7:00 p.m. on Saturday.

We are now accepting exhibitor applications for Saturday the 11th. Please email Colleen@OakParkArtsDistrict.com for the application and information. The participation fee is $35.00. Table & chair(s) can be rented for an additional fee or bring your own; sorry, tents are not allowed.

We are looking forward to another fun and successful Arts District event!
