Ridge Art to Host Stephanie Rose Bird - 11/20
Ridge Art will host local author and artist Stephanie Rose Bird during the opening night of Holiday Lights, an arts festival that celebrates the start of the holiday season in the Oak Park Arts District on Friday, November 20, from 6 – 10 pm.
The event will be a book signing party for Ms. Bird’s third book A Healing Grove: African Tree Remedies and Rituals for the Body and Spirit (Lawrence Hill Books, an imprint of Chicago Review Press, August 2009).
Utilizing the environment around us, A Healing Grove outlines practical and ethical uses of nature’s resources such as selecting the proper tools to work most effectively with tree medicines and eating natural fruits to reduce high blood pressure and increase colon function. Bird also provides pragmatic, modern interpretations of classic African curative remedies for the body, mind and spirit, and includes recipes for organic products such as pine floor wash, peach leaf infusion and orange-based face astringents.
Skillfully interweaving Bird’s cultural life experiences and African folklore and traditions that look to the earth’s natural medicinal properties, A Healing Grove insightfully promotes accessible treatments and meditations for strength and spirituality in a world increasingly detached from ecology and nature.
Stephanie Rose Bird is a practicing herbalist, a professional artist and illustrator and the author of Four Seasons of Mojo: An Herbal Guide for the Natural Home and Sticks, Stones, Roots and Bones: Hoodoo, Mojo and Conjuring with Herbs. She lives in Oak Park, Illinois.
