Family Activities on Saturday, 9/12 from 12-6 PM

Submitted by libbey_paul on Friday, 28 August 2009

In addition to hosting 30+ guest artist exhibitors, Art on Harrison has many family-friendly activities.  Come on down and make a creative day of it on Saturday, September 12.

Live Performances - Join us under the tent from 12-8 PM for many acts, including a family singalong, ukulele players, family street dance and much more.  See the full list of performers and times.  Sponsored by House of Heat.  Wander to the east end of the street to listen to more live music and see Samantha Brenneman and her group of Belly Dancers at 27G Harrison.

Zero-waste “Education Station” Hosted by Oak Park Elementary Schools - Children will have fun learning how to sort trash, and pack a waste-free lunch, and will have the opportunity to pledge to be kinder to our planet with a community art project.  Seven Generations Ahead and Green Home Experts will be on hand to lend their expertise.

Bicycle Prizes & Projects - The first 200 people to come to the Arts District tent located at the corner of Lombard and Harrison will receive a gift bag from Majamas filled with treats donated by Whole Foods.  Next, kids can decorate their bikes with Wonder Works Children’s Museum, and learn more about bicycles and safety from bike guru, Christopher Wallace.  Bicycle repair questions welcomed!

Hands-on Creative Projects - Kids feel like getting creative?  There are several options to pick from:

  • Bead in Hand - 145 HARRISON - On Friday from 6-10 PM and Saturday from 12-5 PM, come to Bead in Hand and turn a broken piece of pottery into a new piece of jewelry.  Wrap the piece with wire and beads and it becomes a pendant, hang it on a cord and it becomes a necklace!  $5 per pendant with cord.  Bring your own broken pottery (save it from the trash!) or we will have plenty to choose from.
  • Buzz Café - 905 S. LOMBARD - Join in the annual chair painting ritual at the Buzz.  The chairs and paint are provided.  All you have to do is bring your creativity.  The chairs will be used in Buzz Café throughout the year.  Painting will be happening between 12-5 PM on Saturday in the Buzz courtyard.
  • Prodigy Glassworks - 207 HARRISON - Stop in all weekend for glass blowing demonstrations.  Check out our August Kids’ Art Camp installation:  “Mix and Match People.”  The installation is on display at Prodigy Glassworks and at Trattoria 225. On Saturday from 1-5 PM, join us in front of Prodigy for torch working demonstrations and hands-on fusing projects.  Create your own fused glass pendant or suncatcher for $15/each, or create a one-of-a-kind 6-inch fused plate for $30/each.
  • Right-Brained Studio, the Art of Creative Thinking! - 140 HARRISON - Come celebrate our 2-year anniversary at Right-Brained Studio with “What Will We Think of Next?”, an art show featuring the work of youth artists who participated in the 2009 summer session!  The opening reception takes place on Friday, September 11, from 6-8pm.  Also, youth art mentor, Mindy Fisher, will be creating funky fun portraits for $10, we’ll be auctioning off a rain barrel designed by Naomi Martinez and Right-Brained Studio youth artists (proceeds go to Hephzibah Children’s Association) and exhibiting the “Taylor Family Art Show” on our Featured Artist’s Wall.
  • Studio Light - 27G HARRISON - Play at our coloring table for kids and adults alike!
  • Whispers from the Moon - 235 HARRISON - Express yourself in a big way by  painting your part of our anniversary community mural project on the side of Whispers from the Moon’s building. Join us on Saturday from 12:00 - 2:30 PM for this free event that is open to all ages, though parent supervision is required for children under 12.
